According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, [Groundbreaking discoveries about the brain have revolutionized their understanding of drug addiction, enabling them to respond effectively to the problem. As a result of scientific research, they know that addiction is a disease that affects both brain and behavior. The NIDA have identified many of the biological and environmental factors and are beginning to search for the genetic [hereditary] variations that contribute to the development and progression of the disease] I believe that the professionals and scientists have their place in searching for preventive measures concerning addiction, but to label addiction as a disease takes the responsibly and accountability away from the individual all together; by labeling addiction as a disease you lead the individual to think they are unable to control their actions, and as a result, the individuals mindset has been influenced to think in opposition to what God has said concerning this stronghold.
As quoted by NIDA, “At the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), we believe that increased understanding of the basics of addiction will empower people to make informed choices in their own lives, adopt science-based policies and programs that reduce drug abuse and addiction in their communities, and support scientific research that improves the Nation’s well-being.” We see in this article, which is written by the researches of this national organization, that they suggest our society adopt or rather accept and agree to the science-based policies and programs to reduce drug abuse and addiction in our communities, but as I stated previously, I believe the professionals have their place or rather their position when searching for preventative measures in recovery. The NIDA’s research article also informs us of how science provides solutions for drug abuse and addiction. The article states, “Scientists study the effects [results] that drugs have on the brain and on people’s behavior. They use this information to develop programs for preventing drug abuse and for helping people recover from addiction. Further research helps transfer these ideas into practice in our communities.” All of the studies provided by the NIDA are and have been very beneficial in addressing the issues of drug abuse and addiction, but these studies cannot and will not be our final authority concerning pulling down the stronghold of addiction. The actions [results] in addiction are only the expression of the deeper problem that only the word of Life can fix. Developing programs based on the results that drugs have on the brain is not what solves the problem. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come! When we accept Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, our identity is found in him and the truth is revealed concerning the root of this spiritual battle. In Romans 6:12-13 it says, “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. Here lies the root, which is “SIN”
